My review of The Hiring Fair by Laura Strickland

This book takes place in Oban, Scotland in 1810 at a time where the people who worked the land didn't own the land and had to pay their Lairds money due.

Annie MacCallum goes to the hiring fair not looking for someone to work for her but for a husband who will help protect her and her land from Ned Randleigh, the acting Laird. Annie also has some of the power of "sight" and neighbors ask her for assistance with any issues they face.

Tam Sutherland was looking for work when he is asked by Annie to be her husband. He has an injured hand and it is difficult for him to get work so he decides to help Annie out. What he doesn't expect is to have his feelings grow for Annie and he knows he would do anything to protect her and those around him, even if it costs him his own life.

I really enjoyed this book. I found that the story grabbed my attention right from the beginning and carried on through the book.

It's pretty sad what women went through during this time when there was no man around to protect them, and I know that it still happens today. I loved the character of Annie and how much she loved those around her and really tried to protect her neighbors at all cost, even when they didn't return the favor.

Tam was a great character in that he was so dedicated to good that he was willing to sacrifice himself. He tried not to let his hand control his destiny and although he had a very sad childhood he kept on going.

Great book!
