As the owner of Rocky Peak’s favorite bar, easygoing Jake Rockwell is everyone’s rock and best friend. But now he needs serious help from the gorgeous and fierce investigator Olivia James—and it’s going to kill him to keep things strictly professional between them.

It’s been a long, hard-fought battle to go from naïve ex-trophy wife to respected private investigator, but Olivia has done it. She now offers her services only to women in need…but she’s made an exception for a friend. Which might possibly be the biggest mistake of her life, since Jake is as maddening as he is charming…and thoughtful…and insanely hot.

The closer they work together and the more Rockwell family secrets they expose, the harder it is for Olivia and Jake to resist their sizzling connection. But their burning almost-romance is about to go up in flames as they uncover the final revelation that could blow Jake’s world apart—forever.

When Olivia woke up in the morning, it was to the sound of cursing coming from the shower. She jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom. Jake had managed to get his clothes off and a plastic bag around his cast, but the shampoo bottle kept squirting from his hand onto the tile floor.
His furious glower made her burst out laughing.
Again. It was a Jake thing, making her laugh.
“Here, let me help. That’s what I’m here for, did you forget?”
“I didn’t want to wake you.” His naked body drew her attention as she squeezed a dollop of shampoo into her palm. He was strongly built, with long ridges of muscle running up both sides of his torso, and solid ripples and valleys of sinew everywhere else. Try as she might, she couldn’t find fat anywhere she looked. And she couldn’t stop looking.
Swirls of hair adorned his chest and formed an arrow that led to the nest of curls hiding his private parts. His penis hung solid and heavy between powerful thighs, now braced apart so he could keep his balance in the slippery shower stall.
He could have easily slipped and fallen while trying to wrangle his shower prep.
“You should have woken me,” she scolded as she reached up to rub shampoo into his hair. “You need to be smarter about this.”
“You said you’d help me with the bar, not showers.”
“Yeah, well, you have to be clean in order to serve drinks, don’t you? Isn’t that what the health code says?” Briskly, she scrubbed his hair, then pushed his head under the water streaming from the showerhead.
She finished rinsing his hair and grabbed a towel off the rack. “Need help with this part?”
He swore. “Damn it, maybe. I fucking hate this. Let me try it by myself first, okay?”
She gave him the towel and waited.
“In private,” he said, with dignity.
She went to the bedroom and got dressed to the sound of bumping and swearing from the bathroom. All the noise made her smile. Face it, Jake made her smile.
Her “have sex and move on” plan hadn’t accomplished what she wanted. She was already wondering when and how she and Jake might find themselves in bed again. There was no doubt in her mind that it would happen. The experience had been too good to walk away from. Besides, they hadn’t actually had sex, so the experiment wasn’t complete. Maybe if they did the outcome would be different.
Yeah, right. Dream on. Sex with Jake would probably make her want more sex with Jake. And then more sex with Jake would probably make her want…
She cut her thought process short at that point. Sure, she might want to have sex with Jake—who wouldn’t? But that didn’t mean, couldn’t mean, that she would ever want anything beyond that. Sex was the end of the road with them. When he didn’t need her assistance anymore, she was going back to LA to resume her life.
But still, things had shifted between them. Being naked together, coming in each other’s arms, had broken down a major wall. She’d run into the bathroom with no clothes on, without even thinking about it. She’d slept the entire night curled next to him. He obviously felt completely comfortable swearing up a storm while he struggled to dry himself off.
She felt at home with him, and maybe he did with her too.
“Olivia,” he finally called to her. “I could use a hand.”
Hiding her smile, she skipped back into the bathroom. Then burst into laughter. Somehow—she had no idea how it was even possible—he’d ended up with the plastic bag from his cast wrapped around his neck, the towel twisted around his left leg, and the shampoo bottle slowly leaking into the sink.
“What would you do without me, huh?”
“Probably walk through a car wash and call it good.”
