Excerpt:

He came to a stop in front of me and looked down at me with an intense expression. “Is that true, Samantha?” I tried to ignore the butterflies in my stomach and everyone’s eyes on me. “I brought your favorite—blueberry muffins,” I said, thrusting the box in his hands. I continued, “I made these especially for you.” I said quietly, my face turning red from the other guys’ attention. This was out of character for me, but after our conversation the other night, I needed to show Jack how I felt. Several of the guys groaned, but then walked back to the basketball court, leaving us alone. “You know my favorite pastry?” He asked, his lips twitching now with the beginning of a smile. I rolled my eyes, relaxing a bit with his teasing. “I’ve paid attention. Don’t get a big head.” “I asked because I think I love everything you make. I don’t have one favorite.” I pointed at the box. “I used the frozen blueberries Luke gave me from his farm. They’re better than any blueberries I could buy from the store.” I was rambling to avoid his intense scrutiny. Jack put the box down on the bench next to us and stepped back into my space. He placed his hands on my shoulders and then he called over his shoulder, “I’m taking a time out. You guys keep playing.” After a few grumblings about not getting to eat the muffins, they resumed play. I heard the pounding of feet on the pavement and the bounce of the ball, but it was all background noise. I couldn’t take my eyes off Jack’s, which were smoldering. My eyes dropped down to his lips and my breath hitched at the memory of the dream when he kissed me. His face came closer to mine and I thought he was going to kiss me. Suddenly nervous, I said, “I wanted to make it clear I like you too —you know, in case you were confused.” I felt my face get hot. I felt like I was in high school again and crushing hard on someone. He pulled back a little to look at my face. “Oh, it’s clear.”
