My review of Adella's Heart by JJ Ellis

Benjamin Croft comes from a family that is well known in Harper's Rock. He is a quarterback for the high school football team and is beginning to get a bit of a reputation with the girls at school. His Aunt Emily and Uncle Russell have just begun a summer camp for Autistic Children at his grandma's ranch. There he meets Adella who is different than an other girl he has met before.

Adella Johnson has just moved to Harper's Rock with her father, Johnny. She is autistic and is there as a camper and as a junior counselor. She is attracted to Ben but also realizes that the high school quarterback never falls for the girl with difficulties so she is reluctant to begin anything.

But as Ben and Adella get to know each other they realize how much they both care but it isn't easy for them. Can they overcome everything in their way to find a happy ever after or will it just be one obstacle after another that drives them apart?

I was kind of scared going into this book after hat happened in the first two books. This book definitely has some difficult moments but I was more content in this book.

I liked Ben and saw how he struggled with who he was and his identity. He had a few girlfriends in the past but when he met Adella he knew she was different than anyone he went out with before. But he faced challenges with Adella being autistic and he felt like he had to constantly defend their relationship to people at school and in town.

Adella was known as the horse whisperer and she was a super interesting character. I do not know enough about autism to judge the character on authenticity. I liked Adella and felt bad that she was used to being treated like dirt because she was different.

As a couple they went through so many ups and downs and it was quite the emotional rollercoaster. The scene in the mountains was terrifying but I felt it wasn't dealt with enough with the mental repercussions.  I know Adella sought help but the help sounded like it was more for the previous issue she was battling with.

The first time Ben had a conversation with Ben Sr. sort of threw me until it became clear that it was in a dream and then it made sense.

The end was very sad and I felt super bad for Ben as it was obvious how much he loved Adella but she felt like she was holding him back.

The epilogue put everything back into place and I was glad for how it all turned out.
