PROLOGUE
River / Present / 23

The velvet caress of silk sheets against my bare skin leaves me hyperaware of what I’ve done. Early morning sunlight slips through the cracked blinds and kisses my exposed back, coating the room in soft pinks and yellows.
Steady, rhythmic breathing sounds from behind me. In, out. In, out. It’s a melody that makes my muscles lock, too afraid to reacquaint my eyes with every dip and curve of chiseled muscle displayed inches away.
His natural musky scent wraps around me, overwhelming my senses until my heart thumps wildly in my chest. It doesn’t take away the memories of lingering touches, gentle kisses, and an overpowering sense of belonging. And less than twelve hours ago, I belonged to Everett Tucker in ways I never thought possible in the ten years of knowing him.
His touches scorched me.
His kisses burned me.
And his body…
The mattress dips with the shift of his weight. I hold my breath, waiting to see if he’s awake. When his soft snores echo in the half-empty room, I release the breath and white knuckle the sheets against my breasts. Carefully, I sit up and squeeze my eyes closed like it’ll soften the blow of reality.
I wait for the pounding headache or quake of unavoidable nausea to punish me, but my conscience reminds me of what I already know. I wasn’t drunk last night. What I’ve done can’t be blamed on alcohol.
My hand drags across my bare neck until my heart thunders in pure panic over my missing possession. I swallow my anxiety when I catch the silver chain resting on the night stand and remember the very moment he took it off me.
Nothing but skin. That’s what he said he wanted between us. I’ve only taken this necklace off to shower and sleep. It goes everywhere with me, the silver paint palette and brush charms sweeping over my heartbeat as a reminder that he cares. But in the moment I had him as more than a wish, a hope, a dream, he didn’t want it lingering.
Nothing but skin.
My fingertips touch the newest charm, a cracked heart, and I suck in a short breath when the contact shocks me. Clenching the sheets tighter to me, I turn slightly to peek through my peripheral and see a tussle of dirty blond hair against my starch white pillow case.
Look, my conscience taunts. Look at him.
Slivers of tan skin make their way into my sight as I shift, my gaze drifting up the mountain of hard muscles that form his toned biceps as they wrap around a pillow. Worrying my bottom lip, my heart summersaults in my chest when the curve of his square jaw comes into view. The sharp line of it is coated with early morning shadow that he’ll shave despite preferring a thin layer of stubble.
He looks peaceful when he’s sleeping; the hard edge he normally radiates eased to a laxed slumber. From this angle, I can see the faded white scar that stretches from the bottom of his left ear along the curve of his throat, landing just above his pulse. You wouldn’t know it’s there unless you know the story, and he doesn’t tell just anybody.
But I’m not just anybody.
Especially not now.
My throat tightens from the emotions lodging in the back of it as I scope out his sculpted body. He works hard for every muscle, spends countless hours in the gym or training at the fire department, and it shows. The man sleeping beside me has been a figment of my imagination that I’ve conjured thousands of times, but his body is a masterpiece I never could have perfected unless I saw it in person.
I absorb the memory of his body spread on my mattress, bare to me. Every vulnerability laying in a mess of sheets, open to pull apart and dissect and regret when the sun fully rises.
Less than twelve hours ago I belonged to the minty eyed boy I’ve loved since I was thirteen. But Everett Tucker isn’t mine to love.
He stirs when I rise from bed.
“Everett,” I whisper brokenly, my heart shattering inside my chest. I can feel the pieces splintering apart as I choke out my final words. “We made a mistake.”

Excerpt:
When Olivia woke up in the morning, it was to the sound of cursing coming from the shower. She jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom. Jake had managed to get his clothes off and a plastic bag around his cast, but the shampoo bottle kept squirting from his hand onto the tile floor.
His furious glower made her burst out laughing.
Again. It was a Jake thing, making her laugh.
“Here, let me help. That’s what I’m here for, did you forget?”
“I didn’t want to wake you.” His naked body drew her attention as she squeezed a dollop of shampoo into her palm. He was strongly built, with long ridges of muscle running up both sides of his torso, and solid ripples and valleys of sinew everywhere else. Try as she might, she couldn’t find fat anywhere she looked. And she couldn’t stop looking.
Swirls of hair adorned his chest and formed an arrow that led to the nest of curls hiding his private parts. His penis hung solid and heavy between powerful thighs, now braced apart so he could keep his balance in the slippery shower stall.
He could have easily slipped and fallen while trying to wrangle his shower prep.
“You should have woken me,” she scolded as she reached up to rub shampoo into his hair. “You need to be smarter about this.”
“You said you’d help me with the bar, not showers.”
“Yeah, well, you have to be clean in order to serve drinks, don’t you? Isn’t that what the health code says?” Briskly, she scrubbed his hair, then pushed his head under the water streaming from the showerhead.
She finished rinsing his hair and grabbed a towel off the rack. “Need help with this part?”
He swore. “Damn it, maybe. I fucking hate this. Let me try it by myself first, okay?”
She gave him the towel and waited.
“In private,” he said, with dignity.
She went to the bedroom and got dressed to the sound of bumping and swearing from the bathroom. All the noise made her smile. Face it, Jake made her smile.
Her “have sex and move on” plan hadn’t accomplished what she wanted. She was already wondering when and how she and Jake might find themselves in bed again. There was no doubt in her mind that it would happen. The experience had been too good to walk away from. Besides, they hadn’t actually had sex, so the experiment wasn’t complete. Maybe if they did the outcome would be different.
Yeah, right. Dream on. Sex with Jake would probably make her want more sex with Jake. And then more sex with Jake would probably make her want…
She cut her thought process short at that point. Sure, she might want to have sex with Jake—who wouldn’t? But that didn’t mean, couldn’t mean, that she would ever want anything beyond that. Sex was the end of the road with them. When he didn’t need her assistance anymore, she was going back to LA to resume her life.
But still, things had shifted between them. Being naked together, coming in each other’s arms, had broken down a major wall. She’d run into the bathroom with no clothes on, without even thinking about it. She’d slept the entire night curled next to him. He obviously felt completely comfortable swearing up a storm while he struggled to dry himself off.
She felt at home with him, and maybe he did with her too.
“Olivia,” he finally called to her. “I could use a hand.”
Hiding her smile, she skipped back into the bathroom. Then burst into laughter. Somehow—she had no idea how it was even possible—he’d ended up with the plastic bag from his cast wrapped around his neck, the towel twisted around his left leg, and the shampoo bottle slowly leaking into the sink.
“What would you do without me, huh?”
“Probably walk through a car wash and call it good.”

Cocoa Pancakes

As a late Christmas present for the house I bought us a real griddle as I was so tired of using the fry pans and having burnt pancakes and it taking so long to feed all of us.

It took me a while to get the griddle out of the box but when I did I was so happy as it reminded me of my grandma having one growing up!

Mik and I were home for the weekend and actually had no sports so she picked out these pancakes to try and I was super happy to give them a try.

These are so easy to make and really delicious! We topped ours with strawberries and whip cream and it was absolute perfection!

Looking forward to having these again!

My review of Nine by Jane Blythe

Someone is targeting girls from a local high school and it is up to Detectives Ryan Xander and Paige Hood. It hits close to home when Paige realizes that her daughter, Hayley, has tutored one of the girls. Yet the killer seems to be infatuated with the number nine and the detectives know they are running out of time when another girl is taken.

Unfortunately for Ryan and his wife Sofia they are having their own problems with their daughter Sophia who recently discovered she was adopted. Now she is acting out and sneaking out with her older boyfriend, Dominic.

Can Ryan and Paige figure out who the killer is before he strikes again?

This is another great book in the series and I have loved watching all of these characters grow over the series

I liked in this book that there was so much from the younger characters who we had gotten to know in previous books but this centered around the family drama between Ryan, Sofia and Sophie as well as Paige, Elias, and Hayley due to Hayley and Sophie being best friends. I liked that part of it stemmed from Sophie learning about her biological parents and how she reacted to the news.

The killer was definitely a smart one and had everything meticulously planned out and was so smart about every detail. He was cold and calculated and I felt so sorry for the girls as they knew what was coming. The twist surprised me for sure and then it made me wonder and I had a few guesses!

I thought I had some guesses but then an event happened and I changed my mind.

It was interesting seeing Dom’s reaction to Ryan and how he wanted Dom away from Sophie. I understood why he didn’t want her dating him but Dom seemed to truly love her. Although I was very grateful that Hayley was trying to talk some common sense into Sophie!

My heart started breaking part way through the book and the pinkie fingers made me so sad!! I completely understood why Ryan and Paige did what they did and I was so shocked that nobody got hurt in that exchange.

I was somewhat sad at the end when we learn about the killer as I was disappointed for personal reasons but the fish part was terrifying!! I was proud of a certain character though for his actions!
Looking forward to the last book!
